In the 2000s, net immigration was maintained at a very significant level: from April 2000 to July 2009, about 1 million “new Americans” settled in the country annually, and in total for the entire specified period, immigration amounted to 8.8 million. man. These are mainly emigrants from Asia – almost 3 million people over the specified period, among which India took the first place in terms of the number of arrivals, the second – China. Also, up to 3 million immigrants came from Latin American countries, almost half of which are Mexicans; about 1 million are emigrants from Europe, the most significant part of them is represented by immigrants from Ukraine, then immigrants from Russia and Great Britain come in almost equal proportions, and the Poles are slightly behind them19. The role of immigration as a factor in the growth of the US population is increasing every decade. Today, in terms of the number of immigrants, this country ranks first in the world – 20% of those who live outside their homeland live in the United States.
