Wednesday Wellness: Summertime Food for Kids

By Audra Labert | In Wellness | on May 22, 2019

“A healthy outside starts from the inside” – Robert Urich

If you are a parent or a grandparent, you know that summer vacation is only a couple weeks away.  This is so exciting for all of us; however, this means more meals will be eaten at home.  Unfortunately for many children this means additional calories with many in processed foods.  It is now estimated that about 17% of children, or about 10 million kids in the United States are obese.  Nutrition is one of the most important drivers leading this problem.

Here are some ways to make healthy, nutrient-dense foods make available your home this summer:

  • Add healthy fats to meals.
  • Make fruit available.
  • Use nuts and seeds for snacks instead of bread or crackers.
  • Vegetables with nut butters or hummus is yummy and filling.
  • Encourage hydration with water. Sometimes its difficult for kids to distinguish between hunger and thirst.
  • Eat healthy grains like quinoa that are filling and nutritious.

We can all benefit from healthy food choices.
