Wednesday Wellness: Play more

By Audra Labert | In Inspiration, Wellness | on July 26, 2018

When’s the last time you cut lose and ran down a slip and slide, really played with your kids in the park, or turned something this is otherwise “work” into PLAY? Sometimes our most stressful weeks or day can be completely transformed, just by lightening up a little. We all know that stress isn’t good for our health, but the ways we deal with stress can also be destructive, creating a “negative feedback loop”. For example: We’re tired and over-extended, so we drink extra coffee or caffeinated drinks to help pick up the slack. The following day or week, it’s the same story, and we need even more of a boost to overcome added stress or responsibility. Over time, the cumulative effect of relying on caffeine, sugar, or alcohol to cope with stress can be cause our immune system to bail, throw hormones off balance, and leave us in a mental fog.

Here are a few ways to add more PLAY into your routine:

  1. Get OUTSIDE! Picnic in the sunshine, fresh air, and a few laughs with friends or co-workers. Take off your shoes, and smoosh the grass between your toes.
  2. Make work fun. Find something that you normally do solo, and create a group to mastermind your task or problem. New ideas can freshen your perspective, and the discussion can be a fun way to build bonds with co-workers.
  3. Lighten up. Even the most stressful days can be diffused with a few deep breaths, a midday exercise break, or a good laugh with a friend.

Letting off steam and stress through some PLAY time is good for your body, and your mind.
